2014 BMW Z2 Details Emerge

2014 BMW Z2 Details Emerge

Initial reports about this BMW indicate that it will be a pure sportscar with the traditional recipe of compact size, soft top, light weight, and rear-wheel-drive (some say it’ll get a new 4WD system). And above all, it’ll be affordable. Think of it as a baby Z4!

BMW Z2 will rival cars like Mazda MX-5 and the new Honda Beat we’ve just been talking about. We hope it will be a proper RWD car. A 4WD sportscar might have more grip and traction, but it definitely won’t be as much fun as a well-sorted rear-drive car.

As for the engines, the Z2,... [Read More]

2014 BMW Z2 To Go All-Wheel Drive?

2014 BMW Z2 To Go All-Wheel Drive?

With all the rumors of name-changes and new models at BMW, it's getting hard to keep track of what's going to be what--and the latest report out of the U.K. makes it that much harder. Is BMW planning an all-wheel drive roadster?

That could be the case, according to CAR. Sporting a soft top, more basic (read: less expensive) features, and aiming at the likes of the Mazda MX-5, the next Z2, a project rumored since 2009, could also sport all-wheel drive.

It's a curious suggestion, as all-wheel drive always adds weight, complexity, and expense... [Read More]

BMW Z2 (2014): the entry-level roadster scooped

Sports cars have never been the true forte of BMW. The 507, 503, M1, Z1 and Z8 were unloved loss-markers which only attained cult status (long) after production had ended.

But the company is readying a new Z2 to launch it back in to the affordable sports car heartland. Because the Z4 coupe-convertible moved upmarket, it's left a gap for a simpler, purer Z3 successor. Here is CAR's scoop dossier on the new Z2, brought to life with our latest artist's renderings.

The BMW Z2: back-to-basics, but not necessarily... [Read More]

BMW Z3 Set To Make A Comeback?

BMW Z3 Set To Make A Comeback?

Rumors of BMW model proliferation continue to spread like wildfire, with the latest being a resurrection of the Z3 roadster. It's a somewhat convoluted chain of development and re-development that gets us there, too.

Consider this one highly speculative for now, but plausible at the same time. BMW may be working to re-shuffle its model lineup to allow the introduction of smaller sub-1-Series cars into the range, as we noted with the M2/2-Series rumor revival earlier today. The impact of that on the Z-Series is that it may convert what was... [Read More]

BMW Z2 Coming 2014: Report

BMW Z2 Coming 2014: Report

According to German automotive publication, Auto Bild, BMW could be set to launch an all-new BMW Z2 sports convertible by 2014. The car will apparently be more than just a baby BMW Z4 and use an all-new platform and DNA.

No official details have been released yet as the new model is still to be confirmed by BMW. Reports suggest it will feature a range of four-cylinder engines, including a variation of BMW’s new 2.0-litre turbocharged unit, producing around 200kW.

Other engines said to be on offer include the 1.6-litre Peugeot/BMW turbocharged... [Read More]
